The Port Moresby Motorcycle Club has been in existence in various forms since 2004 starting life as a small group of off road motorcyclists regularly conducting trail rides here in the nations capital of Papua New Guinea and its environs.
The following year, the Port Moresby Off Road Motorcycle Group held their first enduro at Hugo Canning property at 17 mile. It was claimed that the last event of this kind in Port Moresby had been 30 years prior.
The event was a success with riders attending from all over the country and paved the way for future growth and renew interests in off road riding and competitive events.
In the years that followed the club has grown and held more events while racking up some notable feats for such a small club.
One of the highlights in 2007 including entering the first ever PNG team into Australia’s fastest off road Race, The Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs, Central Australia.
Although the first place trophy and prize money was safe, the Port Moresby Motorcycle Club holds the honor of entering the largest overseas off road motorcycle team to compete in the event in it’s then 32 year history.
HAVE BIKE, WILL TRAVEL
Over the years the club has held various competitions and trail rides that have taken us to some pretty spectacular places.
Port Moresby, Kokoda Track, Central Province, Lae, Goroka, North Queensland, Northern Territory and even South Africa. Travel is not a major issue nor is who joins in on these events.
The Club welcomes all riders of all ages and from all different backgrounds.
The PMMCC has a strong emphasis on adventure and trail riding ensuring basic safety, team work and most importantly having fun.
BUT WHAT ABOUT CRIME ISSUES and RIDING in Port MORESBY?
No way around it, things can go wrong here – it’s a fact
The watch word of the PMMCC is this : Be smart about where we go and what we do
We ensure we are courteous when moving in an out of villages and make real effort to befriend the villagers
They could be just the people you call upon for help should you bin your bike 4 hours ride from any where resembling medical care.
Basically we risk manage by not riding in the same area and setting up a predictable pattern
Sometimes we will not visit an area for 6 -12 months at a time. There is enough great riding to be done that it is not an issue. In 5 years the senior riders have not had any major issues – so we are doing something right .
Age and bikes are not a major concern, however we do ask that the minimum of rider safety gear is worn and that your motorcycle be in a reasonable working order.
On trail rides we ask that:
- You have your own bike with decent fuel range
- You wear a decent helmet with eye protection.
- You have proper riding boots or steel caps at the minimum
- You carry no less then 1 litre of water
- Basic tools
